Modelling the Meteor

Model Gallery

The following is an extensive but not exhastive list of books on the Meteor, Jet engine and aircraft development. I have acquired and read a number of these. If you know of any other books that belong in this list then contact me so it can be updated. A review of the content would also be useful if I can't get a copy of the publication myself. A Tick indicates that I have a personal copy of the book.

An absolute must for enthusiasts of early jet aircraft as well as a useful resource for modellers who might want to detail up a large scale kit of the E28/39, A great addition to my library which I can't recommend highly enough.

Messerschmidt Me262 Sturmvogel In Meteor Flight library

1996 By Dennis R. Jenkins: Warbird Tech series Vol 6 (Speciality Press/ Airlife), I haven't finished reading this yet but have been impressed by the straightforward writing and what appears to be well researched text. It describes the development of the aircraft and its engines and contains many useful photographs illustrating its development. Great for the modeller as well in case anyone wants to build early versions of the aircraft the strangest of which was the first flying prototype which had a piston engine in the nose, no jet nacelles and a piston engine in the front.

Gloster Meteor In Meteor Flight library

1995 By Tony Butler AMRAeS: Published by Hall Park Books, this 80 page book is No 22 in their Warpaint series. It contains a wealth of historical information and pictures showing the colour schemes applied to the meteor in its service around the globe. Also includes many close up detail photographs and a very useful set of 1/72nd scale plans for all versions of the Meteor and some of the more unusual test aircraft. Highly recommended.

Meteor in Action In Meteor Flight library

1995 By Glenn Ashley: Squadron/ Signal Publications, No 152. It contains a good variety of illustrations, colour schemes and photographs. A useful addition to your reference library. Also a useful read concerning the history of the Meteor.

Meteor - Gloster's first Fighter In Meteor Flight library

1995 By Steve Bond: Published by MCP and now out of print, this book emphasises the service history with the RAF and Fleet Air Arm and overseas users as well as its development. It includes a full history of every aircraft and operating unit, I have recently acquired a copy of this book it is one of the better ones that I have seen on the Meteor and has provided several pieces of useful information. A well written and easy to read book that I would highly recommend for any enthusiast on early RAF jet aircraft.

The Gloster Aircraft Company In Meteor Flight library

Engineering for Life - The story of Martin Baker In Meteor Flight library

1979 By John Jewel: Martin-Baker, A good history of the company with some useful pictures of early ejection seats and technical design information.

Gloster Meteor III, Pilots notes In Meteor Flight library

1972 60 Page facsimile of 1951 edition. Published November 1972. ISBN 0859790290
It has been available on amazon.co.uk where I bought my copy for around £3.00, its is good but is not a patch on the genuine article as by comparison the pilots notes for the T7 go into detail on how to fly the aircraft and include performance data that is missing from the facsimile. It does however contain photos of the F3's cockpit which would be great for a modeller seeking to superdetail a kit or scale model Meteor F Mk III.

Man in the Hot Seat In Meteor Flight library

1969 By "Doddy" Hay A very special account of a brave man who tested some of the early ejection seats including one designed for the crew of the Vulcan. He paid a very high physical price.

The Gloster Meteor F4 In Meteor Flight library

1966 By J.J.Partridge: Profile Publications

The Gloster Meteor F8 In Meteor Flight library

1965 By C.F.Andrews: Profile Publications

The Gloster Meteor In Meteor Flight library

1965 By Edward Shacklady: No longer in print but available second hand. 178 pages with 150+ illustrations. An excellent book especially useful as it was published near the end of the Meteors service with the RAF.
One of the best books on the subject that you will find and it is still possible to find used copies on the internet but shop around as prices vary widely as does the condition.

The Quick and the Dead In Meteor Flight library

1955 By Squadron Leader Bill Waterton: Bill Waterton was in the second RAF High Speed flight that raised the world speed record to 616mph and shortly after joined Gloster as a test pilot becoming the chief test pilot in April 1947. In this book he describes somewhat negatively his experiences within the RAF and Glosters and the circumstances leading to his resignation. Only one side of the story but a fascinating insight into the life of a test pilot and the pre British Aerospace aviation industry in the UK. I got my copy via a friend from the book shops of Hay on Wye. Highly recommended and a good read.

Gas Turbines and Jet propulsion for Aircraft In Meteor Flight library

1946 By Geoffrey Smith: This is a real treasure. The 4th edition was written just after the war ended and contains many great photographs and technical details showing the most advanced engines of the day. Well worth the investment and a great addition to my library which has helped clarify historical details about Meteor and jet engine development. It also shows just how Britian ledthe world in early engine development.
