Meteor Flight - Bibliography

Print page
I have collected and read the following books over the past few years and they form the source of much of the historical and reference content for the site. I have also read and drawn from many sources on the Internet. Where different sources are in conflict I have attempted to determine the correct information or have made reference to both ideas. If you disagree with any of the content of this site then please get in contact but you will need to support your submission with suitable reference material that can be verified.

If you have come across other books containing significant meteor or engine development material then please let me know, if you have a book you no longer want then I might be interested in purchasing it depending on price and postage.

Jet Pioneers, Gloster and the birth of the jet age

March 2004 By Tim Kershaw: An in depth and fantastic account of the development of the E28/39 including previously unpublished photos of the two aircraft during their construction. It has interviews with surviving members of the team that built the aircraft and witnessed their first flights. A great resource for enthusiasts of early jet aircraft as well as a useful resource for modellers who might want to detail up a large scale kit of the E28/39.

Jet Jockeys

2002 By Peter Caygill: Stories of the first pilots of RAF jet aircraft, not specific to the Meteor but interesting. Haven't finished reading it yet but recommended.

Messerschmidt Me262 Sturmvogel

1996 By Dennis R. Jenkins: Warbird Tech series Vol 6 (Speciality Press/ Airlife), I haven't finished reading this yet but have been impressed by the straightforward writing and what appears to be well researched text. It describes the development of the aircraft and its engines and contains many useful photographs illustrating its development. Great for the modeller as well in case anyone wants to build early versions of the aircraft.

Gloster Meteor

1995 By Tony Butler AMRAeS: Published by Hall Park Books, this 80 page book is No 22 in their Warpaint series. It contains a wealth of historical information and pictures showing the colour schemes applied to the meteor in its service around the globe. Many close up detail photographs and a very useful set of 1/72nd scale plans for all versions of the Meteor and some of the more unusual test aircraft.

Meteor in Action

1995 By Glenn Ashley: Squadron/ Signal Publications, No 152. It contains a good variety of illustrations, colour schemes and photographs, A useful read concerning the history of the Meteor.

Meteor - Gloster's first Fighter

1995 By Steve Bond: Published by MCP and now out of print, this book emphasises the service history with the RAF and Fleet Air Arm and overseas users as well as its development. It includes a full history of every aircraft and operating unit, I have recently acquired a copy of this book it is one of the better ones that I have seen on the Meteor and has provided several pieces of useful information. A well written and easy to read book that I would highly recommend for any enthusiast on early RAF jet aircraft.

Gloster Aircraft since 1917

1987 By Derek James: Brassey's Putnam Aeronautical, ISBN 0851778070. The revised edition of this hardback reveals many new details of Gloster aircraft development.

Gloster Meteor

1986 By Brian Philpott: Published by PSL

Postwar Military Aircraft No2, Gloster Meteor

1985 By Chase Bowyer: Published by Ian Allen:

Gloster Meteor

1985 By M.J. Hardy: A Super-Profile publication.

Engineering for Life - The story of Martin Baker

1979 By John Jewel: Published by Martin-Baker: A good history of the company with some useful pictures of early ejection seats and technical design information.

Gloster Meteor III, Pilots notes

1972 60 Page facsimile of 1951 edition. Published November 1972. ISBN 0859790290
It has been available on amazon.co.uk where I bought my copy for around £3.00, its is good but is not a patch on the genuine article as by comparison the pilots notes for the T7 go into detail on how to fly the aircraft and include performance data that is missing from the facsimile. It does however contain photos of the F3's cockpit which would be great for a modeller seeking to superdetail a kit or scale model Meteor F Mk III.

Man in the Hot Seat

1969 By "Doddy" Hay: Collins, London: A fascinating account of a very brave man who tested at great personal cost some early prototype ejection seats.

The Gloster Meteor

1965 By Edward Shacklady: No longer in print but available second hand. 178 pages with 150+ illustrations. An excellent book especially useful as it was published near the end of the Meteors service with the RAF. One of the best books on the subject but prices and condition vary widely.

Jet - The Story of a pioneer

1957 By Sir Frank Whittle: The autobiography of Sir Frank Whittle written from his own diaries and notes. A fantastic read which paints a less than complimentary picture of the politics that delayed the development of the early jet engines and the Meteor aircraft.

The Quick and the Dead

1955 By Bill Waterton: Squadron Leader Bill Waterton was in the second RAF High Speed flight that raised the world speed record to 616mph and shortly after joined Gloster as a test pilot becoming the chief test pilot in April 1947. In this book he describes somewhat negatively his experiences within the RAF and Glosters and the circumstances leading to his resignation. Only one side of the story but a fascinating insight into the life of a test pilot and the pre British Aerospace aviation industry in the UK. I got my copy via a friend from the book shops of Hay on Wye. Highly recommended and a good read.

Gas Turbines and Jet propulsion for Aircraft

1946 By Geoffrey Smith: A real treasure, The 4th edition was published in 1946 just after the war ended and contains many great photographs and technical details of the most advanced engines of the day. Well worth the investment and a great resource in calrifying some historical details about Meteor and jet engine development.
