Hans Von Ohain - Jet Pioneer

In 1992 Hans von Ohain and Sir Frank Whittle shared the prestigious "Charles Draper Prize" for their efforts and contributions to aviation and mankind. The prize is recognized as the equivalent to the Nobel Prize in technology.

It is impossible to know how much Hans Von Ohain learned from the patents granted to Sir Frank Whittle's in the early 1930's. He has however been rightly credited with an almost equal contribution to Whittle concerning the development of the turbojet and it was his engine that powered the HE178, the first jet aircraft to fly. Von Ohain was only 22 when he developed his ideas for a continuous cycle combustion engine in 1933 which he patented in 1934, it was a similar concept to Whittle's design but with a different internal arrangement.
